Saponification values
SAP values are compiled by Lye & Oil as the midpoints of published specification ranges. Numerical facts like these aren't copyrightable, and no third-party SAP table or database was copied.
- Codex Alimentarius, Standard for Named Vegetable Oils (CXS 210-1999), Standard for Olive Oils and Olive Pomace Oils (CXS 33-1981), Standard for Named Animal Fats (CXS 211-1999), Standard for Cocoa Butter (CXS 86-1981), FAO/WHO.
- European Pharmacopoeia monographs for refined castor oil and yellow beeswax (saponification value limits).
- Typical ranges from published literature and supplier specifications for shea, mango, sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, hemp, argan, macadamia, linseed and jojoba. These are flagged as lower confidence.
- Molar masses: NaOH 39.997 g/mol, KOH 56.106 g/mol, stearic acid 284.48 g/mol (IUPAC atomic weights).
Other constants
- Wax densities (about 0.86 g/ml for soy and paraffin, 0.96 g/ml for beeswax) and mixed epoxy density (about 1.1 g/ml) are typical rounded values. You can change them in each calculator.
