About Lye & Oil

Lye & Oil is an independent workbench of free calculators for people who make things in batches: cold- and hot-process soap, container candles, resin pieces, and the knitting projects on the side. It has no sign-up and no paywall.

How it's made

The soap calculator uses saponification values compiled by us from published standards. We use Codex Alimentarius oil specifications and European Pharmacopoeia monographs where they exist, and we show the full range behind every number on the SAP chart. The other tools use simple, visible arithmetic, with a worked example on each page. Automated tests check the results against hand-calculated answers every time the site is built. Some text and code were drafted with AI assistance and then checked.

Safety and limits

Lye is dangerous, and natural oils vary. Treat every result as a plan to double-check, not a guarantee. We can't see your scale, your oils or your process, so you're responsible for the safety of what you make and for following the rules that apply where you sell.

Corrections

If a number looks wrong, email hello@lyeandoil.com and include the inputs you used. Errors get top priority.
